Halloween origin

Historian Nicholas Rogers, exploring the origins of Halloween, notes that while "some folklorists have detected its origins in the Roman feast of Pomona, the goddess of fruits and seeds, or in the festival of the dead called Parentalia, it is more typically linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain, whose original spelling was Samuin (pronounced sow-an or sow-in)".[1] The name of the festival historically kept by the Gaels and Celts in the British Isles is derived from Old Irish and means roughly "summer's end".
According to the Oxford Dictionary of English folk lore: "Certainly Samhain was a time for festive gatherings, and medieval Irish texts and later Irish, Welsh, and Scottish folklore use it as a setting for supernatural encounters, but there is no evidence that it was connected with the dead in pre-Christian times, or that pagan religious ceremonies were held."
The Irish myths which mention Samhain were written in the 10th and 11th centuries by Christian monks. This is around 200 years after the Catholic church inaugurated All Saints Day and at least 400 years after Ireland became Christian.

Hey, there...

My students from Inter 6 talked about Childhood and they defined Mother. So take a look at their sentences:

Mother is lovely, friendly, dedicated and takes care of everybody around her. (By Alcione)

My mother is very important for me, because she gave me my life. She is very lovely and my angel. Her name is Rosa. (By Daytta)

Mothers are a present of God. They are special, companion and lovely. My mother is very special for me, because she always takes care of me. (By Eliel)

Mother is love and affection. (By Larissa)

Mother is...
... who takes care when you are sick;
... who makes you happy when you are sad;
... who laughs with you when you are celebrating something;
... a companion for all the moments!

MaDaGaScAr ...

Hey, everyone...
My students from Kids 6 talked about Madagascar....
What do you know about it?!

The Republic of Madagascar is an island country located in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of Africa
Lemurs have been characterized as "Madagascar's flagship mammal species" by Conservation International. In the absence of monkeys and other competitors, these primates have adapted to a wide range of habitats and diversified into numerous species. As of 2008, there are officially 99 species and subspecies of lemur, 39 of which have been described by zoologists between 2000 and 2008.They are almost all classified as rare, vulnerable, or endangered.[23] At least 17 species of lemur have become extinct since man arrived on Madagascar, all of which were larger than the surviving lemur species.
The biodiversity of fauna in Madagascar extends beyond prosimians to the wider animal population. A number of other mammals, including the cat-like fossa, are endemic to Madagascar. Over 300 species of bird have been recorded on the island, of which over 60% (including four families and 42 genera) are endemic. The few families and genera of reptile that have reached Madagascar have diversified into more than 260 species, with over 90% of these being endemic (including one endemic family). The island is home to two-thirds of the world's chameleon species, and researchers have proposed that Madagascar may represent the origin of all chameleon species. Endemic fishes on Madagascar include two families, 14 genera and over 100 species primarily inhabiting the island's freshwater lakes and rivers. Although invertebrate species remain poorly studied on Madagascar relative to other wildlife, researchers have found high rates of endemism among known species. All 651 species of terrestrial snail are endemic, as are a majority of the island's butterflies, scarab beetles, lacewings, spiders and dragonflies.

Ein bisschen Geschichte.

Um pouco de história !

Inter 3 Supermarket Exploration...kkkk

Hi people!

So, my students of Inter 3 learned how to deal with containers to make the uncountable nouns countable in some cases. For example, chocolate is uncountable, but when you say A BOX OF CHOCOLATE or A BAR OF CHOCOLATE you can count it. We had a great time at the supermarket!

En Madrid he disfrutado unos días perfectos.

XOXO meaning...

Hey, there...
Last week one of my students asked me what XOXOXO means... I explained and some days ago I listened a new song of Black Eyed Peas called XOXOXO...

Here is the explanation:

HUGS AND KISSES is a term for a sequence of the letters X and O, e.g. XOXO, typically used to express affection or good friendship at the end of a written letter or email.

It is debatable which letter represents which act. The most common interpretation assumes that X represents the four lips of a kiss and O the four arms of a hug.

A less common interpretation assumes X as the crossed arms of a hug and O as the puckered lips of a kiss. Additionally, there is a more simple interpretation, based on the pronunciation of the letters X (sounds like 'kiss') and O (sounds like 'hold', as in 'I hold you').

Some celebrities sign an autograph and add "xoxo" to their signature in order to express love to a fan.The use of XOXO goes back to the use of an X or cross, which was considered as good as a sworn oath in times before most people could write and therefore used the X in the same way a signature is used today — a mark of one's word. An X at the end of a letter or document was often kissed as a seal of honesty, in much the same way one would kiss a Bible or kiss the fingers after making the sign of the Christian cross. Thus the X came to represent a kiss in modern times.

The "X" was also the ancient Paleo Hebrew letter Tav, and was a symbol of the Seal of Hashem (God) and it represented truth, completeness, and perfection.

The origins of the O as a hug are not generally known, although it is speculated that it may represent the arms wrapped around someone being hugged.

So, see ya

=)

XOXO

STUDY IN THE USA

Hello everybody!

Today I`d like to talk to you about studying abroad. More specifically about undergraduate studies in the USA. Have you ever considered it?
Everybody knows that the US has the best universities in the whole world. On the last top 200 ranking which is released every year by the magazine TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION, 7 out of the top 10 universities were American (the University of São Paulo was placed in 178th).
Recently the American model of higher education has been in such demand some universities decided to go global. The Georgetown University is an example with a campus in Qatar.
But why wait for them to come to us when we can just as easily go to them.
I have noticed in some of my students the potential to go further. Do you think you have what it takes? Then by all means, don`t hesitate, go full steam ahead.

On this website you will find all the information you need about getting into an American university: http://www.collegeboard.org/

And here you can watch people talking about overcoming obstacles to go to gollege:

Don`t limit your dreams!

Have a nice day!

Las clases en Ih Madrid

Hola amigos y amigas,

Y además, he aprendido algunas nuevas palabras.

ESCENAS FUERTES!

Me he arreglado pronto y he salido a la calle.

He comprado unas camisetas, unas blusitas a mi mujer, algo a los niños.
Puro aprendizaje, in loco.

KIWI ACCENT

Hello students.

Have you ever heard of the KIWI accent? The accent from New Zealand?
I used to think that it was very much like the British accent, but it's so much different.
For example, they don't say 'apple' over there, they say 'epa'. They don't say 'PEN', they say 'pin'.

This is a series of videos made by kiwi girls for their English classes. They teach a little bit about the kiwi accent. Check it out!

Fairy Tales...

Hey, guys...

My students from Teens 2 were learning Simple Past and we practiced that with some famous Fairy Tales... How many verbs in the past can you find?

Little Red Riding Hood

Little Red Riding Hood went to the forest to visit her ill granny. She took some cake and lemonade in a basket. She met a wicked wolf that asked her which path she was taking. She replied, I’m taking the path that leads to my grandma’s cottage.

While the little girl was busy picking flowers to take to her grandma, the wolf went to the cottage and swallowed grandma in one gulp. Then the wolf put on grandma’s cap, got in grandma’s bed, covered up in blankets, and settled in to wait.

The girl arrived at the cottage and came into grandma’s bedroom. She said, Grandma what big ears you have, and the wolf replied All the better to hear you with, my dear. And so on with grandma’s eyes: All the better to see you with, my dear, and teeth: all the better to eat you with, my dear.

The wolf swallowed the girl in one gulp and then fell asleep. A woodsman came by while the wolf was still asleep. The woodsman cut the wolf open with his ax and out popped grandma and the little girl. Then the woodsman, grandma and the girl all sat down by the fire and enjoyed cake and lemonade.

Pinocchio

Long ago there lived a lonely old carpenter named Geppetto. He made a puppet out of some wood, a ball, and a string. That night, a fairy visited and cast a spell that made the puppet walk and talk. The next morning, Geppetto discovered the animated puppet and named him Pinocchio.

Geppetto gave Pinocchio all of his money and sent him into town to buy books for school. Instead, Pinocchio used to the money to buy a ticket for the circus. Two clowns gave Pinocchio a hat and asked him to stay, but he said he must go back to Geppetto. The clowns returned Pinocchio’s money, but on the way home he was robbed by and evil cat and an equally evil fox.

The fairy appeared again and asked what happened; Pinocchio pretended he had been captured by a monster. Suddenly his nose grew, and the fairy said, Whenever you lie, your nose will get bigger. Now go find Geppetto; he’s out looking for you by the sea. Pinocchio was rowing a small boat in the sea when he thought he heard Geppetto’s voice coming from inside a large dark cave. He rowed inside, only to find himself inside a whale with Geppetto.

He tickled the whale with a feather, and the whale sneezed, sending Pinocchio and Geppetto flying out on to the beach. Relived, Pinocchio vowed never to lie again and then he heard the fairy’s voice saying, make that promise and you will become a real boy.

Sleeping Beauty

A king and a queen had been trying to have a child for years. When the child finally arrived, they called her Aurora. A great holiday was proclaimed to celebrate Aurora’s birth. Visitors came from far and wide, including three good fairies, named Merryweather, Fauna and Flora. One of the most distinguished guests was another king from a neighboring kingdom, who brought his son Prince Philip. Both kings realized that their dream of a united kingdom could now come true.

The three good fairies began bestowing their gifts upon Aurora. Aurora received the gift of Beauty, and gift of Song but before the last gift was bestowed, a wicked fairy interrupted. This wicked fairy was upset that she wasn’t invited to the party, so she cast a spell on the day of Aurora’s 16th birthday, she would prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die.

The third good fairy hadn’t bestowed her gift yet, and she was horrified at the spell the wicked fairy cast. The good fairy wasn’t strong enough to undo the spell, but she was able to dilute it a bit instead of death, Aurora would fall asleep until her true love come along to undo the spell with a kiss.

As a precaution, all spinning wheels were removed from the kingdom, and Aurora lived in hiding as a peasant with the good fairies for protection. She grew up, met Prince Philip, and fell in love. On the night of Aurora’s 16th birthday, Aurora, Prince Philip, and the good fairies all went back to the castle to live. But the evil fairy snuck into the castle and pricked Aurora’s finger with a needle, causing her to fall asleep. With the help of the good fairies, Prince Philip kissed her and she awoke. They all lived happily ever after.

Cinderella

There once was a widower who remarried. His second wife was ill-natured, and she had two daughters who were just as unpleasant as their mother. The man had a beautiful, gentle daughter of his own, and she was soon to become the servant of her evil step-mother and step-sisters.

They made her do all the chores around the house, and she was named Cinderella, after the cinders she swept out of the fireplace. The King needed to find a queen for his prince, so he threw a huge ball. The evil step-mother and step-sisters were invited, but Cinderella was not allowed to go. After they left, Cinderella’s fairy godmother appeared and changed her dirty rags into a beautiful gown with glass slippers.

Next the fairy godmother changed a pumpkin into a coach and some mice into footmen. Before Cinderella left, the fairy godmother warned her to be home before midnight, because the spell would only last till then. Cinderella was a hit at the ball. The prince fell in love with her and asked her name. Just then the clock struck midnight, and Cinderella ran away.

She was in such a hurry, she lost one of her glass slippers. It was the only clue the prince had to find his true love. He went to every home in the kingdom and had every single young girl try on the slipper to see if it fit. The evil step-sisters couldn’t fit the slipper, but Cinderella did. The prince married her and they all lived happily ever after.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

There once was a queen who named her only daughter Snow White because her skin was so fair and lovely. The queen died, and Snow White’s father married a new queen, who was evil, vain and wicked. Every morning she would stand in front of the mirror and say, Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all? The mirror always answered, until one day it said that Snow White was the fairest one of all.

The evil queen ordered one of her servants to take Snow White to the forest to have her killed. The servant, feeling sorry for Snow white, let her go and brought back a wild boar’s heart to show the queen he had done the deed. Snow White, alone and hungry in the forest, came across a little cottage with seven tiny beds etc. When the dwarves came back form work they found Snow White and said she could stay with them if she cleaned and cooked.

They all lived happily until one day when the mirror told the wicked queen that Snow White was still alive and living with the dwarves. The wicked queen disguised herself as a peddler and went to the cottage while the dwarves were at work. She gave Snow White a red apple that was poisoned.

When Snow White took a bite of the apple, she fell down unconscious. The dwarves were very sad and built a glass coffin for her. One day a prince came by and saw how beautiful Snow White was, and bent down to give her a kiss. Snow White woke up and they were married.

Have a nice week!!!

See ya =)

Entrenador Personal: Una buena escoja.
