Movies, music and books

I was talking to my Inter 6 about movies, music and books, and I was surprised to see that most of my students have never watched a beautiful classic from the 90's, Forrest Gump.

Here's the trailer:

Also, I was surprised to see that some students weren't aware that blues describe not only a color, but also a (GREAT) kind of music. Here's one example of it:

About books, I can oly add the classic horror book Carrie, written by Stephen King. You can download it here. Beleive me: you will not regret.

I hope you watch good movies, nice music and read thought-provoking books on the holliday =)

Easter Curiosities

With many schools starting their Easter break tomorrow, I’m sure there are lots of eggs being bought and eaten. Tons of people eagerly waiting to rip their chocolat eggs open. But do you know how did Easter become the holiday as we know it?

Did you know that the tradition of giving real, coloured and decorated eggs dates back over 2000 years? Eggs of the chocolate variety are a relatively recent phenomenon – in fact Cadburys produced their first chocolate egg less than 150 years ago in 1875.

In Ancient China, Greece and Persia, the egg was a symbol of new life and eggs were exchanged at a festival in celebration of the rites of spring. The goddess of spring, who rose from her winter sleep to fill the earth with new life was known as Eostre by the Anglo-Saxons and that’s where the word Easter originates from.

Interesting Egg Fact

May is National Egg Month In the USA.

The second Friday of October is World Egg Day. The first World Egg Day was October 9, 1999.

Dingus Day

The Monday after Easter is known in Poland as Dingus Day. Dingus Day is a day of fun and laughter. Traditionally, men and boys sprinkle girls and women with water and tap them with pussy willows.

Interesting, isn't it?

Easter Songs

To commemorate Easter festival, people sing special Easter songs. In fact, CDs on famous songs for Easter sell like real hot cakes during Easter festivity. Not only they have gained momentum among youth, but are paving way for popularity of Easter Hymns too. Easter songs sail smoothly in Easter parties. Children dance to the tunes of Easter songs. In churches, men and women sing Easter hymns.

As a part of Easter tradition, people enjoy the soothing melodious songs on Easter, while having their delicious Easter feast. Easter season also gives a warm welcome to the refreshing springtime. Thus, songs on the theme of spring can also be heard in the music stores. There are multiple websites that provide the opportunity of free downloading of Easter songs.

Here is a list of some famous songs on Easter:

Easter parade
Christ the Lord is risen today
He arose
Peter Cottontail
Easter Bunny
Ten little bunnies
Little bunny foo foo
Funny bunny
Bunny hop

Lyrics
Easter Bunny
Looking kind of funny
With your basket of eggs
Children singing
'What's the bunny bringing
For me on Easter Day?"

Mom is cooking
While we're out there looking
For the eggs hidden away
After church we
Gathered 'round with family
On this Easter Day

Two thousand years ago
Jesus died for our sins
Remember his resurrection
And the joy it brings

Flowers blooming
Springtime's looming
Everything is coming alive
Easter colors
Yellow, blue and others
Tell us Spring has arrived

Children are playing
And everybody's saying
"So good to see you today!"
We're all together
The merrier the better
On this Easter holiday

Two thousand years ago
Jesus died for our sins
Remember his resurrection
And the joy it brings

Flowers are blooming
& Springtime's looming
Oh what a wonderful day
We're all together
The more of us the better
On this Easter holiday
A lovely Easter holiday
I like my Easter holiday

Ebonics

Ebonics is a term that was originally intended to refer to the language of all people descended from enslaved Black Africans. Over time, and especially since 1996, it has been used more often to refer to African American English, asserting the independence of this from (standard) English. (FROM WIKIPEDIA)

COLORS

De paseo

Andréia y Ramón

Hey....

Next Sunday we're going to celebrate Easter. What do you know about this festival?

Easter has always had its non-religious side. In fact, Easter was originally a pagan festival. It was co-opted by Christian missionaries starting in the second century CE.

The ancient Saxons celebrated the return of spring with an uproarious festival commemorating their goddess of offspring and of springtime, Eastre. When the second-century Christian missionaries encountered the tribes of the north with their pagan celebrations, they do what Christian missionaries have always done; they attempted to convert them to Christianity. They did so, however, in a clandestine manner.

It would have been dangerous for the very early Christian converts to celebrate their holy days with observances that did not coincide with celebrations that already existed. To save lives, the missionaries decided to spread their dogma slowly throughout the populations by allowing them to continue to celebrate pagan feasts, but to do so in a Christian manner.

As it happened, the pagan festival of Eastre occurred at the same time of year as the Christian observance of the Resurrection of Christ. It made sense, therefore, to alter the festival itself, to make it a Christian observance as pagans were slowly indoctrinated. The early name, Eastre, was eventually changed to its modern spelling, Easter.

The Easter Bunny

The Easter Bunny is not a modern invention. The symbol originated with the pagan festival of Eastre. The goddess, Eastre, was worshipped by the Anglo-Saxons through her earthly symbol, the rabbit.

The Germans brought the symbol of the Easter rabbit to America. It was widely ignored by other Christians until shortly after the Civil War. In fact, Easter itself was not widely celebrated in America until after that time.

The Easter Egg

As with the Easter Bunny and the holiday itself, the Easter Egg predates the Christian holiday of Easter. The exchange of eggs in the springtime is a custom that was centuries old when Easter was first celebrated by Christians.

From the earliest times, the egg was a symbol of birth in most cultures. Eggs were often wrapped in gold leaf or, if you were a peasant, colored brightly by boiling them with the leaves or petals of certain flowers.

Today, children hunt colored eggs and place them in Easter baskets along with the modern version of real Easter eggs -- those made of plastic or chocolate candy.
